Biography Dr Manju C Pallam PhD, MSc, BSc (Hons), Fellow HEE

Manju is an experienced senior University Lecturer, NHS manager, leader and quality analyst with international experience in clinical research and innovation, with background of nursing management, business development and project management. Being a nurse, she has contributed to the quality patient care in NHS. She has close working relationships with many partner organizations’ including many NHS Trusts, Hospitals and CCGS within in GM and nationally. She has contributed to the development and implementation of Network wide policies, strategies, business plans, systems, process and initiatives. She has also taken the lead role in supporting the development, planning, delivery, management, promotion and sustainability of the Continuous Improvement (CI) work stream within Greater Manchester Clinical Research Network and nationally. Manju is the Northwest lead for the Chief Nursing Officers Strategic Advisory Committee. She is also the international co-lead for her university Department.

There are not many senior managers from Asian backgrounds, certainly in Research & Innovation, so Manju very much stands out as an exemplar from a BME background; she is a role model for many nurses through her hard work and perseverance. She is also a founding member of her Trust B (ME) Nurses group. Manju was the first Indian research nurse at Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and was the first Indian nurse to complete Masters from Manchester University in Nursing and is currently in a senior role. Manju’s attainment of her PhD is an example of setting herself as role model for many young workers from any background. Manju Luckson has made the Indian community very proud throughout her career and is currently working as a senior lecturer in Manchester Metropolitan University, prior to working as an Assistant Research Delivery Manager and before that as a Quality Lead, National Institute for Health Research Clinical Research Facility, at Central Manchester Hospitals. She was also the honorary staff of the Manchester University. Her research interest are focusing on BAME.

Manju was the Equality and Diversity Coordinator(ED) for MFT's Research and Innovation Division .Manju has managed to connect the diverse workforce in R&I through the diverse aspects of her own person, such as her ethnicity, faith, good humour, determination and professionalism. She had excellent commitment to develop an inclusive workplace for fellow employees – where fairness, respect, equality, dignity, and autonomy are at the forefront of their values and promoted as part of their everyday goals and behaviour. Manju had a number of equality advocates working in the division with her to actively drive the agenda for E&D in R&I. Manju ensured that ED is a standard agenda item for discussion at every team, department and divisional level. Manju attended the Trust level ED activities representing the R&I. Manju coordinated the evidence data collection for the ED dashboard, the first time in the R&I division.

Finally, Manju has also focused her work around the ED agenda for patients in particular the participation of ethnic minorities in research due to language or other cultural issues; usually a barrier in recruiting patients into research. Manju had been working with the staff on implementing Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) recruitment strategies for research. On 28 Oct 2016, Manju presented a poster about R&I's attempts to increase research participation from BME communities at the Chief Nursing Officer's BME Strategic Advisory Group Annual Conference in London. Manju was the winner for the ED champion category in the CMFT -We are proud of you awards and runner up for the NHS England Windrush 70 awards and British Indian awards. Manju also held role in the executive committee of Nurses Hypertension Association of UK (2007), which adds flavor to her management, leadership, presentation, communication and organizational skills. Her Ph. D explored the research culture of NMAHPs in a research focused and a non-research focused healthcare organization in the UK.Her PhD work has been acknowledged in the Association of UK University Hospitals research resource guide. She has presented her PhD and the tool she has used, at this resource guide's launch in London. She won the nursing research society (NRSI) of India’s best presentation award in 2015.

Manju has enjoyed her career as a nurse and manager for last 20 years and was involved in various projects and transformation work. She has been described as, “An instrumental person to bring on change and a pleasant person to work with, she has been featured in the NHS Wonder women show and has been described as a wonder women by many of her friends and colleagues.
